December 20, 2015 Vermont Oxford Network: Helping Improve the Quality of Worldwide Neonatal Care
We’ve started working with one of the world’s pre-eminent organizations that is helping hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) collect, understand and act upon the medical data they collect. This might mean, for example, tracking the number of opioid addicted babies coming in, the number of head traumas, or any of the other myriad challenges that NICU’s face. VON originally starting by tracking and sharing data but has more recently branched out into the analysis of this data and creating team based recommendations for improving the quality of care. Our first task has been to help VON work with its member NICUs to address the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. The process has even led us to creating a script that was approved and recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (view it here). We’ve helped them increase the traffic to their website on a four fold basis and increased participation in their most recent quality collaborative by 44%. So in our own small way, we’re fighting the resistance!
