June 28, 2019 UVM Agriculture Extension Engages Brandthropology to Help Build National Bio-Security Resources Website
The University of Vermont has one of the most active Agricultural Extensions in the country. They work with farms and farmers across various crops and animal species in support of issues facing the agricultural industry. One of the most prominent challenges that farms and farmers are increasingly encountering is bio-security. You’ll remember the SARS epidemic in Hong Kong for example, where all the poultry in the territory had to be slaughtered. You will also remember the “Mad Cow Disease” outbreak in the UK. Bio-security incidents can cost the industry billions of dollars, and represent an increasing threat as cross border transportation on a worldwide basis increases.
UVM has been awarded a grant to play a leading role in aggregating bio-security best practices so that they may be more broadly shared and disseminated. The work will include defining and sharing best practices both by agricultural sector (farmers, farm workers, firms involved in agricultural transportation, state fairs, veterinarians, etc.) and by stage of bio-security practice (prevention, detection and response).
We are honored to be involved with a project of this importance, and are looking forward to not only supporting UVM in the creation of a website, but also in outreach efforts to various agricultural stakeholders.
